Students do a ‘clean sweep’ in Ganj
Cathedral students clear filth from Hazratganj pavements and urge passers-by to not litter the boulevard
LUCKNOW: Students of Cathedral Senior Secondary School picked up t he broom and embarked upon ‘mission clean’ on Wednesday. Pitching in, principal Fr Melvyn Saldanha cleaned the pavements of Hazratganj and urged passersby to use dustbins instead of littering the beautified boulevard.
“This is the only way to keep the 200-year-old heritage clean,” the principal advised during his 45-minute ‘shramdaan’ on the streets of Ganj. He, along with hundreds of students, extended support to HT’s ‘My City, My Pride’ campaign.
The principal did not hesitate in picking up paan masala sachets from the streets and throwing them into the dustbin. This gesture from him prompted the students, who also cleared filth from the pavements. “Our principal participated in the drive enthusias- tically and gave his best for a noble cause,” said Aayushi and Navya, students of the school.
“Schoolchildren coming forward for the upkeep of their very own Hazratganj was a heartening sight,” said Harshit Bajpai, a Class 12 boy.
The drive evoked positive response. Some passers-by sought an apology for littering while others promised not to repeat the mistake in future.
“The campaign will help create awareness and hopefully when these children grow up, they will remain sensitive to the cause of keeping the heritage clean,” emphasised the principal.
“The cleanliness campaign is a learning experience for the students. It is good to see kids pursuing people not to litter the streets,” said a senior teacher accompanying the students.
After cleaning the road, students also did ‘shramdaan’ in their school.
