UP’s Pradeep wins All India Open Chess tournament

LUCKNOW: UP’s Pradeep Pathak was crowned the champion of the All India Open Chess Tournament with 7 points here on Wednesday. He defeated SK Rathor from MP in the eighth and the final round and pushed Rathor at fifth place to bag Rs 30000 along with championsh­ip trophy. Gurpreet Pal Singh from Delhi defeated Rupesh Kant from MP and secured second position with 6.5 points, while Rupesh slipped on seventh rank and Ram Prakash from Punjab stood third by defeating Kamal Kumar from UP.

Harish Sharma from Delhi achieved 6.5 points to claim fourth position by defeating Santosh Kaushik from Chhatisgar­h who had to satisfy with eighth position. Rafique Khan from MP was placed ninth by defeating Rajeev Singh from UP and Devendra Bajpai from UP defeated Nand Kishor from Bihar to achieve 10th Position.

In under-8 age cate gory Maitreyi from UP, in under-10 age category Nishant Srivastava from UP, in under-12 age category Kopal Vishwakarm­a from UP, in under-14 age category Sangam Kumar Singh from Bihar, in under-16 Vaibhav Agarwal from UP and in under-18 Sameer Sinha from UP stood first. GUWAHATI FRONTIER WIN SSB HOCKEY C’SHIP

SSB Guwahati Frontier won the SSB Hockey Championsh­ip by defeating Ranikhet Frontier 7-1 in the final match played at Guru Govind Singh, Sport College here on Wednesday. The tournament was organized by Lucknow Frontier in which 6 teams from different Frontiers of SSB participat­ed. Ranikhet Frontier could not perform well in the final. Ghasiram Naik of Ranikhet Frontier scored 1 goal in the 6th minute. Guwahati Frontier has been winning trophies for the last 8 years. RAILWAYS WIN NATIONAL OPEN ATHLETICS C’SHIP

Railways immerged as clear winners on the fourth and final day of the 54th National Open Athletics Championsh­ips. In the over all points table Railways finished first with a massive tally of 315 points where as Services were a distant second with 166 points and ONGC came third with 117 points. Ankit Sharma (LIC) was adjudged the best athlete of the tournament for 7.87metre long jump while Tintu Laka of Railways was given the best athlete award in the womem’s category for 2.03.88 min sprint in the 800metre category. Opening ceremony of ‘Centemy sports meet 2014’ was held at Central Academy here on Wednesday. The function commenced with Ganesh Vandana followed by the hoisting of Centemy Flag. The ground came alive with the ceremonial march-past where the contingent­s from UP and Rajasthan region marched to the tune of Central Academy band. JUNIOR NATIONAL ROWING CHAMPIONSH­IP

Lucknow will play host to 35th Junior National Rowing Championsh­ip to be held from 10th to 15th Nov 2014. It is for second time that the Rowing Federation of India (RFI) has chosen Lucknow to host a national rowing championsh­ip. The venue of championsh­ip is Gomti’s stretch between Hanuman Setu and Nishatgunj Bridge. The course is ideal for rowing because the flow is minimal and water is available round the year. Further the course is situated in the heart of the city with road on both sides of river. Around 22 state teams with 300 boys and girls will participat­e in the event.
