Maha, Odisha share spoils, Sunil crowned best player
LUCKNOW: Continuing their good run of for m, the boys from Maharashtra managed to win all the four gold medals on the fourth and final day of the 35th Junior National Rowing Championship here on Saturday. In the girls’ category, Odisha came up trumps for a second consecutive year in running as they won two gold medals to bag the top spot in the standings.
The two other states, Uttarakhand and Kerela, which were in contention for top honours saw their title hops being shattered as their rowers only managed to bag silver and bronze medals.
Last year’s joint winners Uttarakhand boys won just one silver and two bronze medals to finish third while the boys from Kerala won two silver and two bronze medals to secure the runners-up spot.
In the girls category the remaining two gold medals were won by Maharashtra and Assam.
Sunil from Maharashtra hogged all the limelight as he was crowned the best player of the tournament. He not only managed to win the single scull event but also finished first in the double scull event with his partner Vipin Kumar. Kerala’s Vishnu Prasad and Uttarakhand’s Mandeep finished second and third in the single scull event.
Nafesa Sadik of Assam eased past all the other row- ers to finish first in the girls single scull event after clocking 04.01.07.
Karnataka’s TK Keerthana came second with a time of 04.06.36 while Monika Devi from Odisha was third with 04.14.08. In the girls double scull category Maharashtra bagged the gold medal while Kerala and Karnataka finished second and third respectively.
