ALIGARH: Taking strong exception to AMU student union vice president Syed Masood-ul-Hasan’s ‘derogatory’ remarks against union HRD minister Smriti Irani, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Satish Gautam has threatened to take legal action against him. Gautam said not only had he written to Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) vice chancellor Zameeruddin Shah about the incident, but would also register an FIR and raise the issue in the Lok Sabha.

Syed Masood-ul-Hasan had earlier said: “The peons of AMU far more educated than the daughter-in-law (Smiriti Irani) of Balaji Telefilms.”

Addressing mediapersons on Sunday, Satish Gautam said, “AMUSU vice president Syed Masood-ul-Hasan had spoken in an uncivilised manner and we are considering taking legal action against them by lodging an FIR. Moreover, these objectionable comments against the HRD minister were made during AMU’s installation ceremony where AMU vice chancellor Zameeruddin Shah was present but he chose to remain silent. I shall send him a letter, asking him to clarify his stand.”

Gautam also said AMU founder Sir Syed Ahmed Khan had treated Hindus and Muslims as equal and now the AMU fraternity should not do anything to negate that view. “AMU students should stick to studying instead of politicising issues. They must remember that people like Raja Mahendra Pratap had donated land to establish this university and now they should refrain from doing anything that may go against the views of Sir Syed.”

However, this in turn started another series of attacks and counter-attacks, with AMU student union leader Kr Mohd Ahmad asking the MP to tender an apology for such comments.

“If Raja Mahendra Pratap had donated land for AMU then even today we have great respect for him. And if the issue is about land donation, we must remind the MP that the land for exhibition ground, many schools and hospitals was donated by Nawab Muzzamilulla. Rajas and Nawabs have always donated land for public works and they are respected figures. Satish Gautam should not politicise the issue here.”
