Scientists to discuss Mission Clean India

Eminent scientists from India and abroad will deliberate on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream projects, Swachh Bharat and Make in India, at the 102nd Indian Science Congress (ISC) in Mumbai from January 3 next year, Lucknow University vice chancellor SB Nimse told the media here on Monday. Nimse general president of this edition of ISC.

Padma Vibhushan Dr RA Mashelkar and other scientists from across the world will come on one platform to chalk out a road map for Swachh Bharat and Make in India campaigns endorsed by Modi. Mashelkar, for mer director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, was named the chair of an expert panel to recommend best technologi­es for Swachh Bharat national sanitation campaign.

The focal theme of the 102nd Indian Science Congress is: Science and technology for human developmen­t. Nimse explained, “The mission Make in India cannot be achieved unless we innovate in the field of science and technology. So experts were roped in to come to some logical conclusion as to how innovative practices can be adopted to take the country on the path of developmen­t.”

He added that there would be two separate segments at the ISC where subject experts would deliberate upon these two subjects. According to Nimse, all these talks assume significan­ce because recommenda­tions made by the scientists will go straight to various ministries in the Government of India for their considerat­ion. “I’m hopeful that something positive will come out of the deliberati­on,” he told newsperson­s on LU campus.

PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate the ISC on Kalina Campus, University of Mumbai on January 3. HRD minister Smriti Irani and science and technology minister Harsh Vardhan will also grace the occasion. On January 4, there will be Women;s Science Congress and the HRD minister is expected to inaugurate it.

Nobel l aureate Kailash Satyarthi, children’s rights advocate and an activist against child labour who founded the Bachpan Bachao Andolan, has been invited as one of the key speakers at the Children’s Congress to be held as a part of ISC on January 4. Former president APJ Abdul Kalam will be the chief guest at the Children’s Congress.

Professors, research scholars and students of Lucknow University will take part in this science congregati­on in a big way. Scientists from various CSIR laboratori­es will also take part in this event. When asked that there were certain issues over selection process of general president for ISC, Nimse said that he strongly advocated making use of technology for voting purpose. If any senior scientists had any issue, he may directly write to the PM and the PMO would take up the issue.
