Point of reference
Employee referrals form a significant part of the recruitment process for many organisations today and translate to gains for all concerned
Do you have a friend or colleague who has approached you for help when it comes to job hunting? If yes, then referring him/her to your own company can also get you a number of incentives, besides earning goodwill. Many organisations today have employee referral policies that translate to gains for the employer, the current employee and referred employee.
Take KP MG India , for instance. The company has two programmes of this nature — an internal job posting policy and an employee referral programme. According to Shalini Pillay, head – people, performance and culture, KPMG in India: “The employee referral programme is essentially a channel through which we leverage the network of our existing employees to identify, attract and recruit like-minded people who our own employees can vouch for.”
Experts say that cash rewards and related incentives are quite common now. Companies are now giving cash incentives a new twist and also handing out gadgets, electronic goods and even cars and bikes. At Internet product company Directi, that has interesting internal and exter nal referral policies, employees get attractive incentives — Harley Davidson bikes or cars such as Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai i10 Magna and Tata Nano.
Any candidate referring another successful candidate for interviews with Directi can win 50% of the salary of the new hire. The first candidate doesn’t even need to be selected by Directi to claim this prize. For example: candidate A applies for a post at Directi, but doesn’t get

selected by the company. He then refers candidate B for a position at Directi, who gets selected/ confirmed. In this case, candidate A can successfully claim 50% of one month’s salary for candidate B. “The objective of the policies is to increase the candidate pool with qualified candidates that have been culturally vetted by our employees. Employees can refer friends, family and acquaintances for any open position in Directi and in case their referral is hired they get bonus in cash and/or kind,” says Ameya Ayachit – senior manager, talent acquisition at Directi India.
