LUCKNOW: After keeping a list of nine names, sent by the state government for nomination as MLCs on hold for about a month, governor Ram Naik on Thursday gave his approval to four of the recommended names while seeking more information about the remaining five.

The governor called chief minister Akhilesh Yadav to Raj Bhawan and apprised him of the decision.

Naik approved the names of Sriram Singh Yadav, Mrs Lilawati Kushwaha, Ramvraksha Singh and Jitendra Yadav while withholding sanction to the remaining five names, including that of builder Sanjay Seth whose premises the income tax department raided recently.

“More detailed information has been sought from the chief minister about the affidavits given by the remaining five — Sanjay Seth, Kamlesh Kumar Pathak, Ranvijay Singh, Abdul Sarfaraj Khan and Rajpal Kashyap,” said a press release from the Raj Bhawan.

The governor forwarded the complaints he received against the five to the chief minister and sought a probe into the charges so that he could reconsider the recommendation for their nomination as MLC.

“The governor had received certain information, through letters, of complaint about the five persons. The affidavits filed by

the five recommended persons, however, make no mention about this information,” said the press release.

Much significance is being attached to the Raj Bhawan move, as this gives a new twist to the ongoing face-off between the governor and the chief minister over the nominations to nine vacant posts of MLCs.

As the issue has remained pending for nearly a month, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and chief minister have met the governor to convey their point about the nominations. The SP has quoted past instances, including recommendations of the BSP-led government, to justify its recommendations.

The governor, on the other hand, quoted Article 171(5) of the Constitution of India to make his point, saying the five areas (1) literature, (2) science, (3) art, (4) cooperative movement and (5) social service, and the experience of those being recommended for nomination as MLC, be kept in mind for making recommendations.

Quoting more Articles, the governor said the constitutional provisions about nominations should be followed in letter and spirit.

It may be mentioned that the governor had earlier sent a letter to chief minister seeking infor- mation about the background, and fields in which those being recommended had worked, that made them eligible for nomination as MLC.
