VARANASI: Union ministry of rural development has sought details from the district administration of Varanasi about development activities carried out in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s village Jayapur. The ministry has sought information about the number of girls born in the village since November 7 last and number of trees planted by the villagers.

It may be pointed out that Modi had adopted the village on November 7 last during his first visit to Varanasi after becoming the prime minister. On his visit to the village, Modi had asked villagers to plant a sapling on the birth of every girl child in the village. Hence, the ministry wants to know how much compliance of Modi’s request has been made in Jayapur. Every birth of a girl child has been celebrated by planting of sapling in Modi adopted village, Jayapur.

Another point raised by the ministry is about rain water harvesting in Jayapur, an important step towards conservation of water. In the report finalised by the district administration it has been mentioned that the villagers of Jayapur have identified some ponds for rain water harvesting and are also seeking help from a local NGO to conserve rainwater. Some professors of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) have also visited the village to offer expert guidance for rain water harvesting, the report states.

The ministry’s missive has also inquired about whether villagers have constituted any committee for regular inspection of schools to check sanitation, quality of drinking water, toilets, laboratory and library among other things.

“Almost all development activities have been completed in Jayapur. The village is now a model village and this transformation will be celebrated by organising a function,” said Narain Patel, representative of Gram Pradhan Durgawati Devi.

It may be pointed out that villagers of Jayapur have constituted a committed ‘Samagra Gram Vikas Samiti’ headed by Ram Lalit Mishra to look after education, health, self-sustainability, safety and cultural issues.
