Coldplay frontman pays PM Modi a visit
NEW DELHI: While Coldplay frontman Chris Martin’s impromptu gig in a café in the Capital on Wednesday evening raised a storm on social media, the real reason for his visit to India was revealed on Thursday.
He met Prime Minister Narendra Modi with other representatives of the New Yorkbased Global Poverty Project. Hollywood actor Frieda Pinto, who is also part of the project, accompanied Martin.
According to PMO sources, Martin’s interaction with the PM was very formal with schemes such as the Swachh Bharat, Namami Gange and Beti Bachao, Beto Padhao being discussed.
Martin also presented Modi a book on the 13th-century Sufi poet and philosopher Rumi.
“During the trip, the delegation (from the Global poverty Project) will meet with key government leaders, non-profit partners in the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) space, and participate in field visits to see innovative projects addressing sanitation in local communities throughout India,” a release stated.
The crooner also paid Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal a surprise visit. According to sources, the meeting – which was arranged by music composer Vishal – lasted 25 minutes. Martin’s gig on Wednesday evening went viral on social media, with people sharing photos and videos online. He was joined onstage by Dadlani, and contemporary folk music artiste Raghu Dixit.
