LUCKNOW: The Lucknow University witnessed unruly scenes on Monday as a group of agitated students staged a demonstration and gheraoed the vice-chancellor’s office to press for their demands. The agitation led to proctor Manoj Dixit recommending the expulsion of five students who led the protest.

Reports said students started converging outside administrative block since 11 am. The situation took an ugly turn when students started banging the gates of the administrative block and abusing officials of the university administration for not meeting their demand of a sports quota. The protest continued for five hours.

Finally, vice chancellor SB Nimse met the protesters and said genuine demands of the students would be met. The students, however, were not convinced with his assurances and continued to protest, prompting the proctor’s office to take tough action against them. “We have identified five students who created a ruckus. We have urged the V-C to expel them,” Dixit said.

The five students whose exulsion has been recommended are: Ankit Singh, Vishwa Pratap Singh, Neeraj Pandey, Satish Sharma and Prabhat Singh.

This incident has been one more in a series of serious clashes and law and order problem that the university has been witnessing over the past few weeks. The protests have also taken a violent turn several times.
