When I look at the Om symbol or hear someone chant the mantra, I get mesmerised and forget everything that has been dogging my mind. No wonder, at home I’m surrounded by Om signs of various designs.

There is no doubt that Om inspires one to believe that life has to have a meaning and a purpose; and that its journey is essentially beautiful if one takes the right path. It helps you take a positive stand when you are in a vulnerable situation, thereby rescuing you from sure nemesis.

Om is a great cleanser; it cleans your mind and body and makes them compete with the purity of your soul. A clean mind and body makes one see the brighter aspects of life and enables one to face the journey of life with calm and equanimity. It is an energiser and gives you the strength to free yourself from all kinds of stress and angst.

Swami Vivekananda had said that to understand Om is to understand the universe and all that it encompasses so cohesively and beautifully. It represents the universe, all encompassing, and omnipotent, omnipresent and equally benevolent to all.

Om means hope and inspiration for a brighter tomorrow. When you chant it, it brings out the very best in you; and helps you call for a better tomorrow with peace and happiness.

As Amit Ray, a spiritual master, says in Om Chanting and Meditation: ‘Om is not just a sound or vibration. It is not just a symbol. It is the entire cosmos, whatever we can see, touch, hear and feel. Moreover, it is all that is within our perception and all that is beyond our perception. It is the core of our very existence.’
