A high-end luxury car caught fire on a crowded road in south Delhi’s Badarpur while being taken to a service station in Sarita Vihar on Monday morning. No one was hurt in the incident even though images and videos of the incident went viral across social media through the day.

“I was taking a U-turn from below the Madanpur flyover, near the NTPC building, when I smelt something burning. I stopped the car at the turn and got down to see what had happened. Just seconds later, the car caught fire,” the driver of the car, a Lamborghini Gallardo that costs about ` 3.85 crore, Surjan Singh, told HT.

The incident took place around 9am after engine oil started leaking from the car. The car has been sent for analysis to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.

“A report was filed at the Badarpur police station and the car was taken to the company showroom for examination,” a police officer said. A company representative refused to comment.

The car is owned by Satya Prakash Bagla, a 52-year-old businessman currently in the US. His family lives in Sarvapriya Vihar near Hauz Khas. “It is an unfortunate incident. The company representatives have called us and the car is with them,” said a member of Satya Prakash’s family.

The Lamborghini Gallardo was the company’s best-selling model till its production was stopped in 2013. Traffic police said there are only 12 units of this model in Delhi.
