Seeded Tarsh falls on first hurdle

LUCKNOW: It was a bad day for seeded Tarsh Mehrotra on the opening day of the AITA Championship Series Tennis Championship as went down meekly to unseeded Nishant Singh in a first round match here on Monday.

Right-hander Tarsh, who was seventh seed, couldn’t stand before an attacking Nishant, who won by 8-3, at the hard surface of the Vijayant Khand Stadium.

Top seeded Rudra Kapoor was off to a brilliant start, notching up 8-0 win against Kaartik Gupta, but second seeded Amaan Adil Tezabwala of Maharshtra had to struggle a bit before outplaying local challenger Yash Verma 8-6. In the women’s section, young Sasa Katiyar staged a fine show before losing to Arushi 7-8 (5) in tie-break.

Lucknow’s Paarth Cricket Club had a wonderful tour to England where they won five matches, lost two and one ended in a draw due to heavy rain. The players got the experience of playing in London as well as at Staffordshire. They also had a practice session at The Lords.
