Two escalators and three heavy-duty elevators would be installed at the Lucknow Junction as part of North Eastern Railway’s (NER) advancement programme to facilitate passengers.

Officials said both the machines would come up at the foot over bridge near Charbagh railway station that connects all the platforms.

The move came after Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) approached NER, seeking permission to connect the foot over bridge to the proposed Durgapuri metro station.

“Connecting the foot over bridge with the metro station will increase footfall. Hence, the installation of escalators and lifts at the FoB could be of great convenience to passengers,” said an NER official.

For this purpose, NER has floated tenders, inviting companies to ensure the installation of escalators and elevators at the Lucknow Junction. “Soon after allotment, the installation of escalators and elevators will begin as per the plan,” added the officer.

The escalators and capsule lifts would come up at the foot over bridge connecting the proposed Durgapuri metro station. “The escalators would be installed at platform number 1. One will be for upward movement while the other would be for downward movement,” said the officer.

The escalators would cost around 1.5 crore and the deadline for the installation is March 30, 2016.

Similarly, the lifts would be installed at platform numbers 1, 2 and 3. “The lifts would be similar to those installed in the malls,” he said.

The lifts would be of great use for passengers - for those leaving Lucknow Junction and the ones de-boarding metro at the Durgapuri metro station. Costing around Rs 40 lakh each, the lifts are expected to get commissioned by the end of the current financial year.

SK Sapra, ADRM Lucknow NER, said: “Installation of escalators and elevators is in progress. The process is expected to get completed by the end of the current financial year.”

Alok Srivastava, PRO, Lucknow NER, said the tenders for the installation of escalators and elevators have already been floated.
