Transgenders bat for girl child in Bareilly

- CHANDAN KUMAR

Aiming to abolish the malice of female foeticide and the practice of abandoning the girl child, the transgender community of the city opened a girl child help centre in Swale Nagar here on Wednesday.

“Jin ladkiyon ka koi nahi, unke liye main hoon (I am here for the girls who don’t have anyone), said Saroj Kinnar, head of the transgender community, while inaugurating the facility.

The organisation – Kanya Suraksha Vikas Samiti (KSVS) – which will run the facility has planned to adopt girls abandoned by their families and provide them safe shelter where these girls can live and study. “We will educate such girls and provide them with all the necessary facilities,” said Saroj, president of KSVS.

Reportedly, the facility will have a crib at its gate where parents can leave their newborn.

“We urge parents to leave their children in our cribs rather than throwing them in dustbins and sewers of the city,” urged Shahim Khan, husband of Saroj.

“We have already applied for permission to facilitate the adoption of abandoned kids,” he added.

According to Saroj, the facility which currently houses eight trans- genders will be divided into a dormitory, a classroom and a computer centre for the girls who will stay there. The facility will also help girls from poor families. “We will also provide help to girls from poor families who cannot support their education,” said Sanjana, another member of the transgender community.
