SIC probe nails cop’s lie
MANIPULATION S-I had recorded a man’s statement who had died 12 years ago, to dilute charges against five accused
LUCKNOW: A probe ordered by state information commissioner (SIC) Hafiz Usman on an RTI application has helped nail a sub-inspector in Saharanpur district. While investigating a case of assault on a woman and her three daughters, the S-I had deliberately presented in his inquiry report the fake statement of a person who had died 12 years ago, to dilute charges against five accused- one female and four males.
The probe conducted by Nitin Tewari, senior superintendent of police, Saharanpur, , has found the charges against SI Wasiq Siddiqui to be true and a copy of the same has been sent to SIC Hafiz Usman.
However, much to the consternation of the SIC, the SSP has only given an adverse entry to Siddiqui for his serious offence, which was made deliberately to favour five accused, namely Furquan, Rizwana, Azam, Akram and Azmal.
Bhava Sarai locality (Saharanpur) resident Salim’s wife Husna Bano and three daughters Azra, Uzma, and Gulshan were thrashed by Furquan, Rizwana, Azam, Akram and Azmal on May 3, 2013, at their residence over a property dispute. Salim was also thrashed when he reached home after a call from his wife.
When all efforts of Salim to lodge an FIR with the city Kotwali police station failed, he procured an order from the court to lodge an FIR against all five accused involved in the incident.
Wasiq Siddiqui, S-I, city Kotwali, was handed over the probe. Siddiqui, however, col- luded with the accused and in a bid to save them he recorded the statement of one Zahir Ahmad, who had died on February 10, 2002, in his inquiry report. Zahir’s residence is just opposite Salim’s house.
Salim then approached state infor mation commissioner Hafiz Usman and filed an RTI application seeking directive to the Saharanpur SSP to probe the matter. “When I came to know about the matter through Salim’s RTI application, I directed SSP, Saharanpur, to investigate the allegation regarding the SI recording statement of a man who had died 12 years ago, to help the accused,”said Usman.
The SSP found the allegations against Siddiqui true and issued a show cause notice to him, seeking explanation for his conduct and also made an adverse entry in his service book, said Usman.
“It is a serious criminal offence by a police personnel and only an adverse entry is not enough. So, I have again directed the SSP and have also written to the DGP to award stern punishment to the S-I,”said the SIC.
