- Toufiq Rashid & Agencies

Four army jawans and one militant were killed in two separate encounters in North Kashmir’s Handwara area.

Of f i cials said t he ar my and Special Operation Group of Police had launched an operation in Hafruda forest area of Handwara late on Sunday evening.

The encounter that broke out between forces and militants during a search operation in the area was launched by the army’s 66 RR, following some inputs about the movement of militants in the area.

The jawans, according to army sources, were killed in the initial gunfight.

Meanwhile, the army has sent additional reinforcement and launched a massive search to track down the militants. Helicopters have also reportedly been pressed into action.

This is the second encounter in 24 hours in the Valley, as another militant was killed in an encounter in Darpora forest area in Lolab, Kupwara.

On Sunday afternoon, two foreign militants of the Jaishe-Mohammad were killed in an encounter with police and security forces in Tral area of Pulwama district.

Condemning the incident, Jammu and Kashmir deputy chief minister Nirmal Singh slammed Pakistan over the infiltration bid, saying the hostile neighbour’s terrorism activities would prove detrimental to its own existence.

“Pakistan needs to realise that the monster that they have created (terrorism) is going to devour them. If they think that by pushing terrorists from the other side of the border into Indian soil they can wash their hands off them, then they are gravely mistaken. They also need to understand that terrorism is not the enemy of a single country but entire humanity,” Singh said.
