I would not survive long, says mother of two accused

Lila Devi, who suffered from paralysis five years ago, had been dependent on her two sons — Hariom and Shriom. But now with her two sons, accused of lynching a villager for allegedly eating beef, gone, she lies helpless on her wooden cot.

Her daughter, Savitri, who was married in a nearby village, had come to help her carry out daily chores. Shriom was arrested on Monday night while Hariom is still at large.

bring some money for food. Now I have nothing to eat. From the past one week, I have not even taken my medicines as I have no money,” said Lila.

Lila said on Monday night, the policemen came through the roof and took away his son. She claims both of her sons are innocent.

“Hariom is a qualified technician and Shriom is in class 12 (Open school). My husband Raja Ram Singh had passed away 11 years ago. I worked day and night to meet the expenses of my children. Five years ago, I had a paralysis attack and since then, my sons were taking care of me,” Lila said.

Lila’s daughter Savitri said they don’t have money to repair the broken cots and she had borrowed one from the neighbours for her mother. “When the police came, they broke the door and the cot on which my mother was lying. We have no money to fix either,” said Savitri.

Lila is also not happy with media reports naming her sons as accused in the case. “My sons have not done anything wrong. They were here with me at the time of the incident. If my sons don’t return soon, I will not survive for long. What is my fault?” Lila said.
