LUCKNOW: Lifestyle management was the key to keep diabetes at bay, whether one had been diagnosed with it or had sugar level in control, said experts on the concluding day of the 43rd annual conference of Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) on Sunday. They said a healthy life required lifestyle management, including a balanced diet and adequate exercise.

“A survey has revealed that more than the number of diabetics in Uttar Pradesh, there are people who are on the verge of getting diabetes. Hence it is advisable that people adopt healthy lifestyle changes that can keep them fit,” said Dr Sanjay Tandon, eminent cardiologist and a speaker at the conference.

Doctors said that as diabetes afflicted one without any symptoms and led to other problems also, one must keep a tab on blood pressure and monitor obesity if diagnosed with diabetes. “Research around the world has proved lifestyle management is a necessary part of diabetes control and management. Therefore, if you adopt a proper lifestyle, you have less chance of getting uncontrolled sugar,” said Dr NS Verma, treasurer of RSSDI.

Dr Anuj Maheshwari, founder of UP RSSDI said that apart from the status check of obesity and blood pressure, people having diabetes could also check other vital indicators, as per doctors’ advice, to avoid diabetes-related complications.

They suggested that people who did not have diabetes should also keep in mind their family history and if a close relative had it, they should go for blood test once a year. “Diabetes develops silently in a few months hence test should be conducted at least once a year,” said Dr Verma.

They said people having diabetes did not need heavy meals but small and frequent ones. Eating several times a day, Verma said, would make sure the sugar level did not shoot up suddenly as it happened if one ate a lot after a long gap.
