PROF VERMA VISITED MAHILA THANA ON OCT 29 TO INQUIRE ABOUT A CASE FOLLOWED BY SAAJHI DUNIYA

LUCKNOW: The question of police insensitivity towards women and women-centric issues has once again come to the fore with a recent incident.

It has been alleged that the station officer (SO) of the mahila thana allegedly misbehaved with professor Roop Rekha Verma, former vice-chancellor of Lucknow University and secretary, Saajhi Duniya, an NGO that works for women rights.

Protesting the SO’s offensive behaviour, social workers, writers and members of art fraternity have written to the SSP demanding the officer’s immediate removal and appointment of another “sensible officer” in her place.

It has been alleged that Prof Verma visited the thana on October 29 to inquire about a case that was being followed by Saajhi Duniya.

The case had been transferred from Thakurganj thana to the mahila thana and Verma was trying to get some information on it.

Reportedly the SO did not hear out Verma and misbehaved with her, rudely cutting her short.

“Prof Verma is a senior and respected citizen of the city. If the police at mahila thana could misbehave with her, then their behaviour with common people could well be judged,” said a member of Saajhi Duniya.
