To live a good life, be sure there is no life after death

Let us trash for a moment the theories on ‘life after death’, and say we have only one life to live. Let us celebrate it in a manner that we don’t feel the need for any more lives. Such a mind-set will let us have a life lived to the fullest.

A friend says even if we are not sure that there is no life after death, one life is long and good enough for whatever we want to do before we bid adieu. In other words, it will always be to our advantage to assume that we can lead a good and happy life only when we assure ourselves that there may not be another life to enjoy to our full.

You may rightly ask: What is a good life and how do you define it? True, one can’t have an answer that will satisfy all, but there are some ‘basics’ that must be met to enjoy a good and happy life. The most important among them are love, compassion and empathy. Love gives way to compassion, and compassion leads to empathy. Any moment in your life when you start having empathy is indicative of your being a true human being. It fulfils the basic purpose of life to create and have happiness all around.

We are all aware of the wisdom in the saying that it is always better to take full advantage of the certainty of today than to have faith in the uncertainty of tomorrow. Who knows, while waiting for tomorrow’s sunshine, the sun of your life may be setting forever? It is this ‘fact’ that gives us no excuse to have a ‘I-will-do-it-better-tomorrow’ kind of mind-set. After all, the certainty of today is surely there to take full advantage of.
