CHIDAMBARAM ASKS SONIA TO REMOVE TN CONGRESS CHIEF
The bitter infighting in the Tamil Nadu Congress escalated on Monday when a delegation of party leaders, including former finance minister P Chidambaram, called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi to demand the immediate replacement of state chief EVKS Elangovan.
The leaders told Gandhi that Elangovan had failed in strengthening the party in the state where assembly elections will be held in March-April next year.
“We have told the Congress president that the atmosphere in Tamil Nadu is not favourable for strengthening the party. We need a change in the leadership. There should be an eligible and disciplined leader, who is loyal to the party high command and takes the party workers along,” former state chief KV Thangkabalu said after the meeting.
The delegation, also comprising two other former state presidents and senior leaders, had met Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday to demand immediate change of guard in the state.
Thangkabalu accused Elangovan of extending support to a folk artist, who had made adverse remarks against Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the past. “We have not seen a Congress leader supporting somebody, who is issuing statements against the party,” he said.
