Heavy fog hits air travel across Europe

- Prasun Sonwalkar

Hundreds of flights were cancelled at Heathrow – the world’s busiest airport – as dense fog disrupted air travel across Europe, also severely affecting Monday rush hour traffic on roads in Britain and elsewhere.

Fog spread over most of western Europe for the second day, but the weather office predicted it will linger on for another day on Tuesday. Air travel schedule of several airlines was thrown out of gear.

Visibility was less than 100 metre in several airports in England. Easyjet said it had suffered a “major network disruption”, with a large number of aircraft and crew out of place and numerous delays, diversions and cancellations.

Highway authorities cautioned drivers about road conditions, advising them to maintain some distance with the vehicle ahead. There were no reports of major disruption on the train or London underground network.
