VARANASI: The Prime Minister’s Office has asked Varanasi DM to provide best possible treatment to the Russian woman. The PMO also said there should be no delay in referring her for special treatment in case it was required.

VARANASI: A group of women from Argentina, who were on a visit to Banaras Hindu University (BHU), condemned the acid attack on a Russian tourist in the city.

They also complained of the unwelcome attention that they got in the pilgrim town which draws thousands of visitors both from India and abroad.

“Police should enhance the security of tourists,” said Florencia Lumeris, a member of the group of four women.

“I don’t like the way the passersby gaze at us. But we move ahead and don’t pay attention to such people,” she said, denying that she felt intimidated.

In general, she was all praise for the city, saying, “It is good to be in Varanasi. The ghats are great. Sitting at a ghat is a soothing experience. We have been to Assi Ghat, Dashawamedh Ghat and a few others. We enjoyed moving around there.”

Causianza Lopez, a painter from Argentina, expressed anger over the acid attack on the Russian woman. She wanted a drive to make people aware of the way to treat tourists. “This is an ancient city. We are here to enjoy its beauty and antiquity. At some spots, eyes fixed at you spoil the mood,” Lopez said.

Her companions Daiana Ranos and Maria Juliana, also from Argentina, said police should make special arrangements for the security of tourists and ensure that such incidents should not take place in future. “It is really painful to know that a lady was attacked with acid here. We pray that she recovers fast,” Juliana said. Asked whether the incident scared her group, she said, “No. We all are quite at ease. But such incidents should not happen and the police should put in place strict measures.”

She added, “I visited various parts of the BHU and will tour the city. We will also taste some local dishes.”
