Naba, Jyoti run to glory

ALLAHABAD: Proving t heir supremacy, L Naba Chandra, an army man from Pune, and Maharashtr­a’s Jyoti Shankar Rao won the 31st All-India Prize Money Indira Marathon in the men’s and women’s categories respective­ly here Thursday.

Making his debut in the 42.195 km Indira Marathon L Naba Chandra secured the top spot by clocking 2:23:21.

Three-time winner Arvind Yadav from Sports College, Lucknow, bagged the second position by completing the race in 2:25:17. Sunil Kumar, an armyman from Hyderabad, finished third in 2:25:35.

In women’s category, Jyoti Shankar Rao Gawate from Maharashtr­a secured the top spot, clocking 2:52:48. Jyoti Singh from Bhadohi secured the second spot by completing the marathon in 3:06:15 hours while Shyamli Singh from West Bengal finished third, clocking 3:09:58 hours. Cash awards of Rs 2.01 lakh, Rs 1 lakh and Rs 75,000 were given to top three athletes in both the categories while Rs 10,000 each was given to the participan­ts up to 14th spot. LOCALS DOMINATE An 8km cross country race was also organised under different age groups along side Indira Marathon, on Thursday.

In boys category, of 15 to 20 years of age, Anil Kumar Singh, Anil Yadav and Roop Chandra Pal, all from Allahabad secured top three positions. They were given cash award of Rs 10,000, Rs 5000 and Rs 3000, respective­ly.

In the 4km race of veterans’ category, Naval Kishore from Allahabad bagged the first place. Yogendra Yadav from Gorakhpur got second position and Lal Chand from Allahabad bagged third place. They were given cash award Rs 5000, Rs 3000 and Rs 2000, respective­ly.
