UPBA Academy shuttlers do UP proud

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh shuttlers staged a fine show at the Sub-Junior National Championsh­ip, winning one silver and four bronze medals in Pune.

BK Yadav won a silver medal in the boys under-13 singles, losing to Andhra Pradesh’s Sanjeeva Rao Relly 20-22, 11-21.

Earlier, Ayush Raj Gupta too lost to same opponent in the semifinals by 11-21, 23-21, 15-21 to get the bronze medal. The duo of BK Yadav and Ayush Raj Gupta too went down fighting to the pair of Jayant Ranab and Vikas Yadav 12-21, 16-21 to bag the second bronze in the boys under-13 doubles.

Amolika Singh had the third bronze medal for UP, when she lost to Simran Singhi of Maharashtr­a 18-21, 21-10, 18-21 in a thriller in the girls under-15 singles.

However, Siddharth Mishra and Siddarth Salar won UP’s final bronze medal in the boys under-15 doubles. They lost to Maisnam Meriaba and Akash Thakur 25-27, 12-21.

“The results show that our shuttlers are progressin­g and that’s a very good sign for the UP badminton,” UP Badminton Associatio­n’s executive secretary Nishant Sinha was quick to say on Thursday.

“Undoubtedl­y, our juniors shuttlers have been winning at the state and national levels for the last few years. What they need now is more hard work and dedication to get on top of the country,” added Sinha.
