‘Journo’s news antenna should be up always’

-

During her early days in journalism, her editor in Nagpur told Sathya Saran, “You are a journalist and need to go to work, come rain or hail or an earthquake. If you don’t, then no one will come to know what happened.’

Since then, this has been the mantra of Sathya’s life. Renowned journalist Sathya Saran, who is currently consulting editor with Harper Collins India, was in Lucknow on Sunday evening and shared her experience at a session on women in journalism.

“Woman or man, your antenna for news should be up 24hours. I have personally worked during riots,” she said while sharing her three decades of experience at a session by FICCI FLO, Lucknow, Kanpur.

The event was convened by Jyotsana Kaur Habibullah and Nidhi Prakash. Sharing her views for young women journalists, Sathya said everything in life was important. The work and family also demanded a woman’s time and focus.

Asked about her own life, Sathya said, “There is always something to do in life that does not end with one thing. You talk to me in Lucknow today and you never know where I will be the next morning.”

“As a woman I was better than some of my male colleagues in journalism,” she said. Strongly influenced by Hindi cinema and music, Sathya grew up singing songs from the 1960s and even today cannot ride in a car without breaking into song.
