- HT Correspondent

A young IAS officer in Uttar Pradesh has become famous for serving as district magistrate/ collector of 14 districts – the most by any Indian civil servant – within a span of 10 years of his service.

Amit Gupta, presently posted as special secretary in the chief minister’s office, was felicitated by Limca Book of Records on Saturday for holding the national record as a civil servant, having served as district magistrate of the maximum number of districts in UP.

“Yes, I have got the certificate from Limca,” was all that a reticent Amit had to say when contacted by Hindustan Times.

Holding a bachelor’s degree in electronics and engineering communication, this 2000-batch IAS officer hails from Madhya Pradesh.

Though he first took over as DM of Hamirpur in 2005, Gupta’s shortest tenure as collector has that been of Jalaun and Kannauj.

In both the places, he served as district magistrate for just 21 days before being appointed as the collector of Etawah, the home district of Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav in 2007.

In 2009, he was shifted in the same capacity to Firozabad. Before taking up the assignment of special secretary in the chief minister’s office in February 2014, Amit had done brief stints as collector in Lalitpur, Pratapgarh, Maharajganj, Shravasti, Lakhimpur Kheri, Budaun, Bijnore, Pilibhit and Rae Bareli districts also.

Incidentally, Uttar Pradesh figures among the five top states in the country after Haryana, Jharkand, Assam and Chhatisgarh, where officers are frequently transferred.
