Dr Joas Wagemakers specialises in Islamic studies and Arabic at Utrecht University. His research focuses on modern Salafism and Islamism, especially the ideological side of these phenomena, and their ties to classical Islamic debates and history. He has published extensively about these subjects including the book, A Quietist Jihadi: The Ideology and Influence of Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, published by Cambridge University Press
