ANIL KUMBLE

MUMBAI: Just weeks after the BCCI imposed stringent rules pertaining to conflict of interest, Anil Kumble announced his decision to step down as chief mentor of the Mumbai Indians.

Kumble was one of the first few casualties after the BCCI passed the measures during the Board’s AGM earlier this month.

The former India captain, who was the chairman of the Board’s technical committee, was replaced by former teammate Sourav Ganguly after his role with the IPL franchise was cited as conflict of interest. GREAT YEARS Commenting on his exit, Kumble said, “I sign off with the obvious satisfaction of moulding a set of brilliant individuals to a high performing unit. Over three years, MI met with unprecedented success, winning the IPL twice and the Champions League once. Winning both trophies in the same year (2013) being our crowning glory.”

Kumble was first appointed chief mentor in 2013. Ahead of IPL 8 in 2015, Kumble was joined by Ricky Ponting as head coach and Sachin Tendulkar as mentor in a star-studded but overcrowded support staff bench that also had former India coach John Wright in charge of youth development.
