Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University has penalised over 400 engineering and management colleges in the state for carrying out fake admissions of reserved category students to pocket their fees reimbursed by the state government.

According to officials of the university, which regulates all government and private engineering and management colleges of Uttar Pradesh, the colleges used to show fake admission of SC and ST students on paper to pocket the reimbursed fees.

The university has imposed fines on more than 400 engineering and management colleges after large-scale anomalies in admissions for the academic session 2015-16 were unearthed.

Till now, the AKTU has realised a total fine of ` 2 crore from these colleges - `5,000 per fake student mentioned in the pre-enrolment list, officials said.

The pre-enrolment list sent to AKTU by the colleges had many fake names.

After completion of the counselling process, the AKTU had demanded the pre-enrolment list of students from the colleges.

However, when the university asked for documents of all students mentioned in the list, the colleges were not able to furnish them, they said.

“This exercise was necessary to check the ongoing malpractices in colleges and to improve standards of technical education in the state. Pre-enrolment list of colleges are being revised and fake names are being removed,” said Prof Vinay Pathak, vicechancellor, AKTU.
