PEACEFUL POLLING IN LUCKNOW

LUCKNOW: Second phase of panchayat elections were by and large peaceful in state capital’s developmen­t blocks—Mall and Malihabad – which recorded around 79 and 75.5 percent voting respective­ly. Around 951 candidates were in fray for the posts of gram pradhan and gram panchayat member from both the blocks. Polling that began at around 7am sharp also witnessed long queues of the female voters, who started queuing up soon after the voting started. “We want change hence we are making sure that each and every woman cast her vote, to bring change to the village,” said Noor Fatima, a native of Mehmood Nagar of Mallihabad block.

SDM, POLICEMEN INJURED IN STONE-PELTING IN MAU VARANASI: A sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) and several police personnel sustained injuries in stone-pelting over alleged irregulari­ties in the voter list at a polling booth in Mau during the second phase of the village pradhan (head) and village panchayat members’ election on Tuesday.

The group of people who resorted to stone-pelting included a candidate for the post of pradhan and his supporters. The incident took place at polling booth number 49 at Ramnidhi Primary School (Mishrauli) in Ghosi block.

SEVERAL TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN RAE BARELI RAE BARELI: Several persons were taken into custody in the second phase of the gram pradhan and village panchayat election in Rae Bareli on Tuesday. They were detained for obstructin­g the polling process. A voter turnout of 70% was recorded till the filing of this report.
