Many villagers don’t want him back

- Chandan Kumar

BADAUN: While the local police have maintained that they have no official information about the release of the convict and his return to his native village on Sunday, the police are, according to sources, fearing for the life of the convict if he returns to the villages. The juvenile convict in the Delhi gang rape case – convict number six –was released on Sunday after serving a three-year sentence.

“The village is divided into Hindus and Muslims and the Hindus don’t want him back,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.

“There are around 500 houses in the village and only about 100 houses want him to return to the village, the remaining don’t want to see his face again.” said an elderly of the village.

“They might tell you that they want him to return but from within they are against it,” he added.

Similar views were expressed by several other people of the village. “Who knows whether he has reformed or not. He has spent more than half of his life outside the village. Why is he returning now,” said a 25 year old from the village.

The fear of something untoward happening could be sensed from the move of the administration to deploy a police team comprising an Inspector, two assistant police inspectors, five constables (armed) at the village. The team reached the vil- lage early in the morning and remained there until 1 pm.

“It’s our duty to ensure his safety and we will do that,” said one of the policeman deployed at the village. “He committed the crime in Delhi, he was living in Delhi, he was imprisoned in Delhi... I don’t understand why they want to bring him here,” he added.
