Looted thrice in 7 yrs, academician moves to rented house
Disillusioned with the city police and fearing for the safety of his family, wellknown academician professor AK Verma has left his house and moved to a rented accommodation.
Between 2008 and 2015, two cases of loot and a dacoity have taken place at his house.
In 2014, dacoits attacked his family at their Kalyanpur residence.
Verma and his wife were assaulted and the dacoits looted cash and valuables worth Rs 25 lakh. The police have failed to solve the case so far.
After this incident, the couple moved to their Civil Lines residence, but a burglary took place again on October 10 this year.
His house was also looted in 2008 when he was living abroad.
Fearing for the safety of his kin, Verma has now moved to a rented house in an apartment. Sources also said Verma was disillusioned by the rude treatment meted out to him by the police.
Professor Verma, a senior faculty of political science with the Christ Church College, has taught at Havard University and is also associated with several prestigious journals.
On getting to know that the well-known academician had lost faith in the city police, senior officials of the department tried to convince him to move back to the old house.
SP (rural) Surendra Nath Tiwari, who met the professor at his new residence, said the case will be solved and he will be given full security. SSP Shalabh Mathur also urged him to have faith in the police.
“The police are with Dr Verma and he should not be afraid of anyone,” Mathur said. “I am going to meet him personally after which he will change his mind hopefully,” he said.
Verma told police officials that he had shifted to a rented accommodation for his peace. “I am a common man. There is nothing special about my case. I do not want to look back at my losses or the unsolved cases. I want to keep my location undisclosed. I only want peace of mind so that I can contribute to academics in future.”
