ABOHAR MURDER: AKALI LEADER’S NEPHEW AMIT SURRENDERS

-

Amit Doda, one of the main accused in the Abohar Dalit murder case, surrendered before police on Saturday night.

“Amit surrendered before the Abohar superintendent of police, headquarters,” Ferozepur deputy inspector general of police Amar Singh Chahal said, adding that main accused Shiv Lal Doda had not been arrested yet but efforts were on to nab him.

Punjab Police had issued a look-out circular against Shiv Lal and his nephew Amit on Saturday. The two were booked in connection with the murder of 27-year-old Bhim Sain, whose limbs were chopped off by suspected henchmen of the liquor baron in Abohar on December 11. The police have so far arrested 13 men in the case.

The Congress had accused Punjab Police of going soft on the Akali leader and his nephew due to pressure from the SADBJP government.

On Saturday, Raj Kumar Verka, vice-chairman of the National Scheduled Castes Commission, instructed DGP Suresh Arora to provide security to the families of the deceased and injured Gurjant Singh Janta. “There are inputs that the accused may try to eliminate the witnesses,” Verka said.

Meanwhile, Congress leader and Abohar MLA Sunil Jakhar demanded a CBI probe monitored by a Punjab and Haryana HC judge into the murder. Jakhar said he would approach other political parties, including the BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party, seeking their support for the CBI probe.

Talking to reporters, he said, “We have no faith in the probe being conducted by Punjab Police.”
