LUCKNOW: He has extremely low vision. Overcast conditions and rain are always difficult for him. Even daytimes are dark when he loses his vision completely. Despite the disability, he has managed to outshine everybody in his class.

Ramandeep Singh will take home a gold medal at the Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University’s convocation this year for securing highest marks in BA.

With his cornea damaged from birth, doctors had declared him visuallyimpaired. But as he grew up, he learnt to manage his works independently with a slight vision.

“My vision depends on climatic conditions. I have zero vision during overcast conditions and rain. Even day time is hard for me to manage. But during nights, I get a low vision and that too in a lamp light. With this vision I have managed to study so far,” he says.

Despite the disability, Ramandeep doesn’t depend on Braille books. “I manage to study on my own. My family also assists me in studies by reading out my books aloud. On my own, I can’t read for more than an hour at a stretch.”

Having excelled in studies so far, Ramandeep dreams to be selected in civil services examination. “I am trying to manage time and devote some hours to the preparation along with my college studies,” he says.

Another student Preeti Verma, who is also visuallyimpaired, will take home a gold medal for securing highest marks in post graduation. With Hindi as her subject, Preeti aims to become a teacher.

Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University has declared the list of medal winners for the second convocation. Sixty five medals will be distributed on the occasion. The highest honour of Visitor’s gold medal has been bagged by Mukta Yadav, MBA. Sakshi Srivastava, MEd, and Jaya Singh, BEd, will take home the Visitor’s silver and bronze medals respectively.

The chief minister’s gold medal has been bagged by Jyoti, Sakshi Srivastava and Mukta Yadav for Arts, Special Education and Commerce faculties respectively.

According to Prof AP Tiwari, dean of academics of the varsity, the convocation is likely to be held in February. The university had hosted its first convocation on September 30, 2014.
