National flag symbol of pride for every Indian: AU V-C
ALLAHABAD: Allahabad University is set to hoist the national flag “proudly and prominently” which will be visible from all parts of the campus as a symbol of national pride. The decision comes in the wake of the resolution unanimously adopted by the vice chancellors of all central universities during a meeting in Surajkund, Haryana, on Thursday.
Not only AU, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) is also warming up to the idea. State’s only open university - Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU) - will adopt the practice only after receiving specific instructions from the chancellor and UP governor Ram Naik.
As per the resolution, all central universities across the country will fly the national flag proudly and prominently atop high mast to evoke feeling of nationalism among the students.
The VCs’ conference was chaired by union minister of human resource devel- opment Smriti Irani.
“The national flag is a symbol of pride for every Indian. Our freedom-fighters have made huge sacrifices and our brave soldiers face hardships and make supreme sacrifices for its honour every day. I welcome the resolution of flying the national flag every morning at central universities,” said AU vice chancellor RL Hangloo while talking to HT on his return from vice chancellors’ conference.
He said that a meeting of university officials would soon be held to decide the exact spot where the national flag would be unfurled every morning and taken down in the evening with full honour. The meet will also finalise the persons who will be entrusted with this vital responsibility.
This initiative of the university will be in addition to the similar practice being carried out at AU Union Hall for the last one year. The practice was initiated by former president of Allahabad University Students’ Union Bhupendra Singh Yadav. Moved by the resolution, the MNNIT administration is also planning to fly the tricolour on its campus. “We have the place and are already following the practice on special occasions like Republic Day and Independence Day. As the national flag generates pride in the hearts of all Indians and motivates them to work for the country, daily unfurling of the tricolour will not only inspire budding techies and managers but also motivate teachers and staff,” said MNNIT director P Chakrabarti.
He said that modalities of the practice would be worked out soon.
Vice chancellor of UPRTOU MP Dube also welcomed the decision. Director of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A) Somenath Biswas said that he was aware of the resolution adopted by the VCs and if specific orders were issued for centrallyfunded technical institutions, he would also start the practice on the campus.
