LUCKNOW: Want to save the fast-disappearing sparrows? Keep water in an earthen pot under a shade in an open space of your house. Many such simple yet effective tips will be shared as part of various programmes to be held on Sunday, World Sparrow Day.

Thousands of people will pledge to save sparrows at different programmes being organised in the state capital to mark the day.

Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav will also participate in the initiatives planned for Sparrow Day. On the occasion, the CM will release a book and a CD on sparrows. He will also distribute sparrow nest boxes.

Another event that has generated enthusiasm among the people of the city is the cycle rally that will be flagged off from Janeshwar Mishra Park at 7 am and conclude at La Martiniere ground.

Apart from that, over the past week, lakhs of students of Lucknow have pledged to save sparrows, trees and wildlife as part of an initiative by the forest department.

Students of several Lucknow schools - both government and private - took oath soon after their daily prayer for saving the sparrows and the environment. “We will help the sparrows live, save trees and save animals. We will keep the surroundings clean,” vowed the students as they took the pledge.

At this programme, students were also informed about the life cycle of a sparrow and the threats that the little bird faced with rapid urbanisation.

Till now about 50,000 sparrow nest boxes have been distributed in the state, especially in schools. People have been asked to place these artificial nests in their homes along with water in a separate vessel.

“As during the summer season there is water scarcity, we have made an appeal to children and residents to make arrangements to provide sparrows with water,” said Anupam Gupta, director of Lucknow Zoo.

The events planned for Sparrow Day are aimed at bringing sparrow lovers and nature enthusiasts on a common platform and kick off a conservation movement to save flora and fauna.
