Four youths consumed a poisonous substance at the Gandhi statue in Hazratganj here on Saturday afternoon. The youths were protesting against the state government policies in police recruitment for the past two months and demanding to meet chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. They were rushed to hospital where doctors flushed out the poisonous substance from their stomachs. Their condition was stated to be stable when reports last came in.

Alok Kumar, Santosh Kumar, Sumit Rajput and Brijesh, had been staging a protest on Laxman Mela ground since the second week of January but the district administration allegedly did not look into the matter. On Saturday at least 50 protestors, including the youths, gathered at Gandhi statue and started walking towards the chief minister’s residence on Kalidas Marg.

The four youths consumed a poisonous substance when the district administration stopped them moving towards Kalidas Marg. ACM-I Santosh Kumar, who was present on the spot, rushed them to the civil hospital with the help of the other protestors. They were under treatment and their condition was said to be stable.

The ACM said the district administration had assured the protestors to fix their meeting with the chief minister on Monday. Besides, police has been deployed on the spot to avert any further trouble.
