LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government is likely to send new names to governor Ram Naik who on Monday formally returned the file rejecting the remaining five of nine names sent to him earlier for nomination as MLCs.

The state government had recommended nine names to the governor for nomination as members of the legislative council (MLCs) in May 2015. The governor had accepted only four names on July 2, 2015. The names approved by the governor included Sriram Singh Yadav, Lilawati Kushwaha, Ram Vraksh Singh Yadav and Jitendra Yadav

A Raj Bhawan communique said the governor has asked the state government to send fresh recommendations while returning the file of MLC nominations. Sources said the state government had requested Raj Bhawan to return the file in connection with a court case.

Those whose names did not get the governor’s approval include Kamlesh Kumar Pathak, Sanjay Seth, Ranvijay Singh, Abdul Sarfaraz Khan and Raj Pal Kashyap, “The governor expects the chief minister will send fresh names at the earliest as per the assurance given to him,” said the communique, adding, “Despite assurances given by the chief minister in this regard, Raj Bhawan has not received new names from the state government.”

Although the governor had made his reservations against the five names known to the state government earlier as well, he has noted them down in the file this time.

The governor said there were criminal cases against some of those recommended by the state government for nomination as MLC. He also pointed out that the state government’s nominees did not have any experience or knowledge in five fields -- literature, science, art, cooperative movement and social service as mentioned in Article 171 (5) of Constitution of India.

Earlier, a face-off had been witnessed between the Raj Bhawan and the state government on the issue of MLC nominations in view of chief minister’s reluctance to change the recommendations. On Monday an official spokesman however said, “The state government will send new names to the governor soon.”
