MISSING INFY TECHIE DEAD

-

Raghavendran Ganeshan, 31, missing since March 22 terror strikes in Brussels is dead. He was on the metro train that was ripped apart by a blast at Maelbeek station, external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said. His last phone call was tracked to the metro. The body was identified on Monday and was being flown to India, the ministry said. Ganeshan, who had been working in Belgium for four years, visited India in February to meet his newborn son. At least 35 people were killed and more than 300 injured in blasts at Brussels airport and Maelbeek station.

NEW DELHI: The Infosys employee — who went missing after the terror attack in Brussels last Tuesday — was confirmed to be dead by the ministry of external affairs on Monday. “Belgium authorities have identified Raghavendran Ganeshan as one of the victims of the barbaric attack in Brussels on March 22,” ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said.

Ganeshan, hailing from Tamil Nadu, was indentifed among the dead on Monday. “The body is on its way back to India via Amsterdam. Our sincere condolences to the family,” Indian ambassador to Belgium, Majeev Singh Puri, said.

The Infosys employee was travelling by the metro when the explosions rocked Brussels.

External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj had posted Ganeshan’s photograph and appealed for help. At least 35 people were killled and over 300 injured after two bombs exploded at the Brussels airport and one at the Maelbeek metro station.

Ganeshan had been working in Brussels on a project for four years. He had visited India last month when his wife had delivered a baby.

Ajay Agarwal, attache (consular) with Indian Embassy in Belgium, said Ganeshan’s body was being taken to Amsterdam. “We are trying our best to reach the airport on time. Our colleagues from Hague are coordinating with us so that we are able to send the body to Chennai tonight,” said Agarwal, on Monday night.

While Ganeshan’s younger brother, who works in Germany, was already in Brussels since the day of the attacks, his Bhayander-based parents joined the search on March 25, officials said.

Since there are no direct flights between Amsterdam and Chennai, the family is expected to travel with Ganeshan’s mortal remains via Frankfurt or London, sources added.
