Investigation agencies probing the killing of National Investigation Agency (NIA) officer Mohammad Tanzil Ahmed on Wednesday detained three suspects, all of them shooters, who are being interrogated. The police are likely to work out the case on Thursday.

A senior police officer said, “After a tip-off, police teams raided hideouts of the suspected shooters in Bijnor, Aligarh, Sambhal and Bulandshahar districts.”

“Three shooters allegedly involved in the killing of Ahmed were picked up at various spots. The interrogation of the trio is continuing,” he said. Refusing to disclose the identity of the shooters the officer said, “The sleuths are trying to correlate the information provided by the suspects with the evidence collected by the district police as well as the investigation agencies. We might lift the curtain from the mysterious murder of the NIA officer soon,” he said.

Talking to HT, additional director general of police (law and order) Daljit Singh Chawdhary said, “The probe team has ruled out the terror angle and completely focused on the personal enmity aspect in the murder of the NIA officer. We have collected some vital evidence and the investigation is on the right track,” he said. Chawdhary visited Bijnor on Tuesday and monitored the progress of the investigation.

Teams of UP Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), UP Special Task Force (STF), district police as well as central investigation agencies probed the murder of Ahmed. After a thorough probe, the terror angle was eliminated. During investigation, the police found that Ahmed had invested in property and there was a tiff with local people.

The police also collected video footage of the wedding of Ahmed’s niece. Some unidentified persons were present at the ceremony. Later, the identity of one such person was established and he turned out to be a family member.

The identity of the other persons is yet to be established. “Raids were conducted in various districts on Wednesday evening to nab the accomplices of the shooters as well as the persons involved in hatching conspiracy. The name of a woman has also come to light and police are trying to locate her,” a police officer said.
