NC R win state women’s hockey title

LUCKNOW: North Central Railway (NCR), Allahabad scripted a new chapter in the Senior State Women’s Hockey Championsh­ip, lifting their maiden cup while brushing aside North Eastern Railway (NER), Gorakhpur 4-2, at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium here on Wednesday.

It was NER, which put the ball rolling in the summit clash as they forced into lead in the very ninth minute through Shivani, who struck a field goal (1-0). Within minutes, NCR restored parity through captain Binita, who converted a penalty corner in the 20th minute (1-all).

The ding-dong battle continued even after a change in the ends and in the 44th minute, NER took the lead again this time through Shivani’s second field goal (2-1).

But thereafter, there was no respite for them as NCR eves shot three back-to-back goals to finish off the match in style. Sulekha scored second goal in the 56th minute, before Dipika (63rd) and Jyoti (65) sharing two goals between them.

Lucknow Hostel finished third as their trounced Gorakhpur Sports College by 4-1 after leading by 3-0 at the half-time. BILAL EXCELS Bilal Khan struck 65-ball 88, containing 13 fours and two sixes as Super Heroes beat Super Lion by six wickets to win the 2nd Emerging Talent Search Under15 Cricket Tournament, at the Avadh School Ground here on Wednesday. While chasing 163 in 50 overs, Super Heroes romped home in 26.4 overs. Opener Yuvraj Singh made 41. Earlier Sashikant Pandey took five for 51 for the winners. LCAC IN SEMIS LCA Club scored a convincing 50-run win against Guru Govind Singh Sports College to make it to the semi-finals of the 13th Babu Banarasi Das ‘B’ Division Cricket League, at the Dr Akhilesh Das Stadium here on Wednesday. LCAC scored 160 for nine while batting first and then got the rivals out for 110. HOCKEY TRIALS Trials to select Uttar Pradesh senior women hockey team will be held on Friday, at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium here at 7.0 a.m. This will be followed by a 12-day camp at the same venue. Uttar Pradesh Hockey secretary RP Singh informed that the selected team would participat­e in the 6th Hockey India Senior Women National Championsh­ip, scheduled to be held from April 25 at Bengaluru. GREAT RESPONSE Excitement seems to have caught the media houses as over half-a-dozen teams from different newspapers, electronic channels and even online web portals have confirmed their participat­ion in the Shine City “Media Twenty20 Cricket Tournament”, beginning from April 9, at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium here under the auspices of the Kaivalya Communicat­ion, a brand management company. They include, Times of India, Hindustan Times, Amar Ujala, DNA, The Pioneer, Voice of Lucknow, Swatantra Bharat, Business Standard, Electronic Media XI, Indian Express, Gaon Connection, Online Reporters XI, Dainik Aaj and defending champions Doodarshan-AIR XI. All other newspapers are expected to confirm their participat­ion on Thursday when the entry closes in the afternoon.
