LUCKNOW: It was perhaps the fastest dash that an ambulance here made to cover approximately 28 kilometres in around half-anhour on Wednesday evening, from King George’s Medical University to the airport.

The purpose was to transport the liver retrieved from a brain dead patient from KGMU to airport and from there to New Delhi via flight. But it was crucial to reach the organ on time for a successful transplant.

The KGMU authorities contacted the police department and cops soon arranged the traffic free route / ‘green corridor’ KGMU—Hazratganj— Bandariabagh—Cantonment— VIP road—airport.

“That was a sincere effort supported by one and all. No one understood the sudden stopping of the traffic at Hazratganj but when we saw an ambulance passing all our anger evaporated ,” said Rakesh Sharma, who was going from Hazratganj to Gomti Nagar.

Other commuters, including those who had to wait in the scorching heat of the day, also appreciated the effort as it was to save a life. They said waiting for a noble cause did not hamper anyone’s work.

The majority was not aware of the cause when the traffic was stopped, at least at 20 busy points.

Locals initially thought it was for VIP movement and a minister’s cavalcade would pass soon through the road but watching an ambulance moving swiftly, they appreciated the cause .

“Whether in Lucknow or in New Delhi, someone will get a new life and that’s the greatest thing we need to understand,” said Anubhav, another commuter who was on Chowk Road when the ambulance moved out of KGMU.

“In fact, making way for the ambulance should be a regular practice in the city. A green corridor should always be there for such life saving activities,” said Dr Sandeep Kapoor, director, Health City and Trauma Centre.
