Woman falls into drain, dies

-

A 23-year-old woman died after accidentally falling into a drain in Bazarkhala locality here on Thursday. Her body was recovered from Haider Canal.

The victim identified as Geeta had allegedly fled from her house in Ghaziabad and she had been staying here in Gulzar Nagar locality with one Guddu Awasthi since last one month.

The incident took place when Guddu was busy in his daily work of manufacturing ‘rewadi’ in a unit near his house around 11am while Geeta was at home doing household work. Police said the girl fell in the drain accidentally and died before she could be saved. Locals initially thought that a child had fallen into the drain and rushed to rescue her. They took out Geeta and rushed her to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Guddu told the cops that he had met Geeta while selling rewadi near the Charbagh railway station around a month ago. He said she told him that she belonged to a tribal community and her family stayed in Ghaziabad.

He said the woman had run away from her house after a spat with her parents and reached Lucknow.

“I initially took her to my parental house in Hardoi but later shifted back to my local accommodation in a slum alongside Haider Canal in Bazarkhala, as my family opposed her stay there,” said Guddu and added, “Since then the girl was staying with me.”

He said the girl was epileptic and often suffered the attacks. He apprehended that she might have fallen into the drain after suffering epileptic attack.

District police spokesman Alok Pathak said the woman’s body had no injuries marks but the body has been sent for postmortem for further examination. He said police team was extracting more details about the victim from Guddu and informed her family in Ghaziabad about the incident.
