GORAKHPUR: A local court sent a Congress MLA to jail on Tuesday for failing to appear before the court in connection with two criminal cases filed against him at Sewarhi police station.

Ajay Kumar Lallu, the Congress legislator, represents Kushinagar district’s Sewrahi in the Uttar Pradesh assembly.

Additional chief Judicial magistrate (ACJM ) PK Jayant rejected his bail plea. After being served a non- billable warrant and a property seizure notice by the court, the MLA finally appeared before it to seek bail. Dismissing his bail plea, the court ruled that “the people will lose faith in the judiciary if the lawmakers do not give due regard to legislation.”

Out of the eight cases filed against him between 2001 and 2008, he was granted bail in six but was convicted in two others related to violence and creating disruption.

In the first case, he was booked for clashing with police personnel at Dudhi district hospital after some patients created a ruckus over negligence in treatment in the year 2000. The other case dated back to 2001 when he led a protest over a social issue. He was not appearing before the court for hearing in these two cases since 2008 despite several notices ...

When the MLA did not turn up for hearing despite issuance of NBW the court issued notice of seizure of his property following which the MLA arrived in court on Tuesday and sought bail.
