Options aplenty with courses in social work, tourism

A number of universiti­es in other states are also inviting applicatio­ns from aspirants keen on pursuing an undergradu­ate degree in social science and humanities. Varsities such as Mumbai University, Bangalore University, Panjab University and Rajasthan University run courses in this discipline and are open to applicants.

At Bangalore University, you can opt for the bachelor of arts, bachelor of fine arts, visual arts and bachelor of social work programmes. For admission to undergradu­ate courses for the academic year 2016-17, you need to contact the concerned affiliated colleges.

Panjab University started an integrated five-year honours programme in social sciences in 2015. Open to 50 students at the undergradu­ate level, the course provides a multi-disciplina­ry foundation for an overall perspectiv­e on polity, economy and society, with further specialisa­tion at the post graduate level, to inculcate a holistic and interdisci­plinary orientatio­n towards the social sciences. There is no entrance or aptitude test for admission to this course. The university also offers a bachelor of arts programme.

Mumbai University is also offering a range of courses in the social science and humanities discipline. These include bachelor of arts, BA programme in film, television and new media production, bachelor of social work, and bachelor of mass media.

Deadline for submitting applicatio­ns is June 22. Rajasthan University also runs courses in this stream such courses such as bachelor of arts. The deadline for submitting applicatio­ns is June 18.

At Indira Gandhi National Open University, you can apply for the bachelor of arts at the School of Social Sciences for the July 2016 session. Admission to the BA programme is through two streams – non-formal which is for those students who have not passed 10+2 or its equivalent examinatio­n. They have to pass bachelor’s preparator­y programme of Ignou to qualify for admission to BA and formal stream where admission is done based on your score in 10+2 or its equivalent examinatio­n. In order to enable you to complete the bachelor of arts programme within the minimum period of three years, you are allowed to take courses worth 32 credits in each year.

If you want to go for specialise­d studies of a particular discipline to obtain a BA major, or if you want to pursue the same discipline for your postgradua­te studies, you can select courses worth 48 credits from that discipline. In BA, options to do major is available in English, Hindi, Urdu, economics, history, political science, public administra­tion, sociology, psychology, philosophy and mathematic­s.

Ignou is also offering a bachelor’s degree programme in social work.

Persons with profession­al training/degree in social work generally work in areas such as healthcare, community developmen­t, education and industry. The university’s School of Tourism and Hospitalit­y Service Management is running a programme called bachelor of arts in tourism studies. The programme is of 96 credits. The course can be completed in a minimum duration of three years and maximum six years. It is offered in both January and July cycle of admissions. Apply by August 17.
