BJP MP Hukum Singh extends Eid greetings to Muslims

- S Raju

After being targeted by rivals for allegedly polarising voters on communal lines by raising the issue of ‘Hindu exodus’ from Kairana, BJP leader and MP Hukum Singh went around in different villages to extend Eid greetings to Muslims.

Rivals described it as an attempt to shed his ‘hardliner Hindu’ image which he acquired after raising the issue of ‘Hindu exodus’.

Singh had been in the news after releasing a list of 346 and 63 Hindu families respectively who allegedly migrated from Kairana and kandhal towns. But, he later clarified that the exodus was due to deteriorating law and order situation which led to killings of a few traders who refused to pay extortion money to local criminal gangs.

However, he was targeted by rival parties who accused him of raising the issue ahead of UP assembly elections in a bid to polarise voters on communal lines. The ruling Samajwadi Party even dismissed his claims of exodus and the district administration, after spot verification of listed families, also found no truth in the MP’s claim.

On Thursday, Hukum Singh visited many Muslim families of his constituency to wish them ‘Happy Eid’. He extended his greetings to people at the residences of Farman, pradhan of village Alipur, Rashid, pradhan of Butrada village, Mashooq Ali in village Taprana, one Javed Tomar at village Hathchoya and many others.

He relished ‘Sheer’ (a special dish made on the occasion of Eid) and participated in ‘Eid Milan’ celebrations at Garhi Daulat village of Kandhala town.

“Hukum Singh has acquired the image of Hindu hardliner and is now making efforts to have a secular image,” commented Kiranpal Kashyap, district president of Samajwadi Party in Shamli.

RIVALS DESCRIBED IT AS AN ATTEMPT TO SHED HIS ‘HARDLINER HINDU’ IMAGE WHICH HE ACQUIRED AFTER RAISING THE ISSUE OF ‘HINDU EXODUS’.
