AGRA: The high speed Spanish Talgo train clocked 120kmph during the second phase of trial on Saturday between Mathura and Palwal. The Talgo left Mathura at 12.40 pm and reached Palwal at 01.35 pm, covering 84 kilometres. On the return journey, it left Palwal at 2 pm and reached Mathura at 3.12 pm.

The trials are to continue till July 31.

The first trial of the second phase took place after repeated postponements. The Talgo had reached Mathura a couple of days ago and was in the yards.

Railway officials said the train’s speed was 120 km per hour during the trial run. “More than 20 trials would be conducted till July 31 under different sets of conditions for practical testing of track worthiness,” said a North Central Railways official.

It is expected that the train speed would be gradually increased by 10 kmph to touch 180 kmph. “The rack of the Talgo would be tested with different conditions including empty, filled, dry and wet rack for subjecting the train to different physical conditions,” said the official. Railway officials, Research Designs and Standard Organisation (RDSO) officials and Spanish experts will remain on board for the trial runs.

Hauled by 4,500 HP diesel engine, the Talgo train comprises two executive class cars, four chair cars, a cafeteria, a power car and a tail end car.
