Checking drive during odd hours

- HT Correspondent

LUCKNOW: Do not be surprised if you are intercepted for vehicle checking while returning home between 12 midnight to 2 am. The city police have adopted a new strategy to curb movement of anti-social elements and drunk driving . the drive was carried out simultaneously at 51 different locations here on Saturday midnight.

Nearly 2010 four-wheelers were intercepted and 91 people were penalised for flouting norms while four-wheelers of seven suspected people were seized after they failed to produce proper registration papers. Black films were also removed from the glasses nearly 10 fourwheelers.

“Anti-social elements often move at odd hours, as it ensures uninterrupted movement . Police personnel too are a little reluctant to go out on roads during odd hours. The drive would help curb anti-social elements and check police personnel’s alertness at the same time,” explained SSP, Lucknow Manzil Saini.

She emphasised that similar drives would be carried out frequently to send a strong message to the anti-socials that they could be intercepted round the clock and to ensure police alertness for any situation .

Notably, the drive was the fallout of cops’ slackness exposed during the intervening night of July 1 and 2 when a highway robbers’ gang escaped after breaking the toll plaza barrier at Bachchrawan on LucknowRae Bareli border despite IG, Lucknow zone, A Satish Ganesh circulating an alert message on police wireless at around 1am. Surprisingly, only two COs were found in the field and others were found napping.

Eight COs were at home and four others failed to respond till next morning.

Furious over the cops’ lethargy, the IG had asked the SSP to tighten the noose over the cops.
